New Brunswick, NJ – The successful launch of a rocket in January by SpaceX, the Elon Musk company, puts the firm back on track to pursue its’ goals, which includes a potentially significant venture into satellite Internet, according to SatelliteWerx.com. After two rocket launch failures in two years, SpaceX successfully launched a rocket on January 4, 2017.

The Falcon 9 rocket launched this month carried with it 10 satellites which are part of a total of 70 satellites SpaceX is sending into space for the company Iridium as part of a plan to enhance its satellite network for phone service and high-speed Internet. But Musk’s SpaceX is also pursuing satellite Internet on behalf of their own company. The market for satellite Internet is potentially huge, as an estimated 4 billion people, or over half of the world’s population does not have access to broadband Internet or in many cases any Internet service at all.

SpaceX filed an application with the Federal Communications Commission for approval to build a large network of 4,425 orbiting satellites to facilitate the high speed satellite Internet system the company envisions. When completed, the proposed system could provide Internet speeds via satellite that would be on a par with the fiber optic networks currently available through most cable companies at the present time. So, the privately held SpaceX’s goals are ambitious. And they are not the first company attempting to carve out a viable system of high speed Internet delivered via satellite technology. While SpaceX is essentially a rocket launch company at this time, the potential profitability of satellite Internet could dwarf their rocket launch business in just a few short years, if all goes according to plan.

Among the SpaceX objectives is to accomplish the retrieval and reuse of rocket boosters instead of letting the boosters fall into the sea and losing equipment worth millions of dollars. The ability to reuse the rocket boosters changes the economics of satellite communications in a significant, positive way.
